The name Stokes is derived from the city Stoke-On-Trent located in England. Stoke-On-Trent was home to the world's greatest pottery manufacturers.

Mr. Philip Shiveck, a watchmaker by trade, founded the company in Montreal in 1935. The first store sold primarily jewellery, porcelain collectibles and fine china and was located on Rachel Street in the "Plateau" district.

Today, Stokes is Canada's leading retail chain specializing in tabletop and giftware products and its stores are located mostly in Canada's best enclosed malls.
